Abstract

Fuzzy sets or blurry artifacts? A comment on Zhang and Oxley

Zhang and Oxley (1992; hereafter Z&O) present a comparison between Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA), Detrended Canonical Correspondence Analysis (DCCA), and Fuzzy Set Ordination (FSO). FSO is a promising new ordination technique (Roberts 1986), and I applaud Z&O for attempting to rescue the technique from obscurity. Like all techniques, however, FSO can be misused. I intend to demonstrate, using computer simulations that the patterns observed by Z&O can arise using random vegetation data
